Dieter Kosslick, born in Pforzheim in 1948, studied communication science, education and politics at the University of Munich. From 1979 to 1982, he was personal advisor, office manager and speechwriter to Hamburg's First Mayor Hans Ulrich Klose and press spokesman for the ‘Leitstelle Gleichstellung der Frau’, after which he wrote for the magazine KONKRET.
After his work with the Hamburg Film Fund, the Brussels MEDIA programme and the Filmstiftung Nordrhein-Westfalen, he headed the Berlin International Film Festival, the Berlinale, for 18 years.
He taught as a professor at the Film University Babelsberg Konrad Wolf, and has received numerous national and international honours such as the Federal Cross of Merit First Class, Commandeur des Arts et Lettres.
For his commitment to culinary cinema, he received the Eckart Witzigmann Prize and the Telluride Film Festival Silver Medallion (USA).
In collaboration with journalist Peter Körte, he wrote a book about bagels (Das Buch Bagel). And in 2001, his autobiography ‘Immer auf dem Teppich bleiben - von magischen Momenten und der Zukunft des Kinos’ was published.
Since 2024, he has been Director of the new environmental film festival ‘Greenvisions” in Potsdam, Germany.
